Does Your Church Website Pass the 5-Second Test?

Try this: Go to your church website right now and set a five-second timer. When it goes off, close the tab. Can you remember what your church is about, when you meet, and where you’re located?
If the answer is no, we need to talk.
Your Website Is Your Most Important Outreach Tool
I know that’s a bold statement. But here’s the data: 46% of all Google searches are local. Nearly half of all web traffic is people searching for places, businesses, and groups near them. When someone moves to your city and starts looking for a church, the first thing they do is Google it.
If your church doesn’t have a strong web presence, it doesn’t exist to them. I’m not being dramatic. That’s just how search works.
What First-Time Visitors Are Looking For
A 2018 Pew Research study found that 96% of people rely on their own research when making an important decision, and 46% rely specifically on digital tools. Church shopping is no different. Before they ever visit in person, someone will:
- Read about your beliefs and denomination
- Look at photos of your worship space and congregation
- Check your service times and address
- Look up your pastor
- Read your Google reviews
- Watch a video of your worship or a sermon clip
Your website is handling all of those interactions before a single human being talks to them. It needs to be ready.
The 5 Things Every Church Website Needs
- Clear service times and location on the homepage. This should never require more than one click to find. Never.
- A clear statement of what your church believes. People want to know if you’re a fit before they show up.
- Photos of real people. Stock photos of empty sanctuaries are a red flag. Show your actual congregation.
- A page for new visitors. Answer the questions they’re afraid to ask: What should I wear? Where do I park? What happens with my kids?
- Sermons or video content. Let people preview your preaching culture before they commit to showing up.
Google My Business: The Thing Everyone Ignores
Go to Google right now and search for your church. What comes up in the sidebar? Is your address right? Are your hours updated? Do you have photos? Are there reviews?
Your Google Business Profile is often the first thing people see before they even click to your website. It’s free to set up and claim. There’s no excuse for it to be outdated or incomplete.
COVID Showed Us What Was Missing
When the pandemic hit and churches went online overnight, many discovered their digital infrastructure was not ready for the moment. Not enough churches had been livestreaming. Not enough had invested in their web presence. When millions of people went online looking for hope, many churches simply weren’t there.
We can’t go back and fix that. But we can make sure we’re ready for whatever comes next.
Your website matters. Update it. Optimize it. Make it easy for a first-time visitor to find you, online and in person.
